How often do I really need to clean my cast iron grill?

 I have an iron Chuck "box grill" that goes over a camp leader. It worked fine proportioned, but I do not have to rub and oil after each use.

I was grilled by the Maid Scouts this month. A sixth-grade troop that's working toward their column badge needed to interview a real-life writer. When 12-year-old Gabrielle called to ask if I'd turn out to an afterschool meeting, I thought, “Who? Me?”

The fact that I am a real-viability writer continues to surprise and delight me. How did I get so lucky to do what I love for a living?

I was a sixth-grader myself when I level head over heels for the practice of putting pencil to paper. Ms. Bidlack continued what my fifth-gradient teacher Miss Richards had started: Encouraging proficiency through everyday journaling and frequent book reports, research papers and in a word stories.

Ms. Bidlack scrawled entire paragraphs of feedback onto my homework. Her fanatical praise and constructive criticism urged me to push the limits of my creativity on the pages of my notebook.

Even though I'd been bit by the bug, I'm sure that when folks asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, seldom me never answered, “A writer!” I'm sure I was just like those Popsy Scouts I spoke with the other day — not really clear what being a writer could connote beyond the kind whose name appears on a dust jacket at Barnes & Noble.
